This special concert celebrates the birthday – and ongoing career – of the highly respected pianist/composer Dr. Tony Gould, who retired from his fulltime position as Professor of Music at Monash University at the end of 2015.
Gould is possibly the most ‘formally’ recognised figure to work in the Australian jazz scene (although he refers to his music as “post-jazz”), with a Two Year Australia Council Fellowship over 2006/2007, and a Don Banks Fellowship in 2009 (as well as an Order of Australia), plus the 2011 Australian Jazz Award “Hall of Fame”.
To mark his 79th birthday, he is joined by long-time colleagues Ben Robertson (acoustic bass) and Tony Floyd (drums), together with some of his favourite players as guests: Mirko Guerrini (tenor saxophone); James Sherlock (guitar); and Ilaria Crociani (voice).

No doubt RADIOSUCCESSI is the only truly Italian jazz quintet delivering “Certified Genuine Italian Swing” in Melbourne, since 2015.
Wanna know why? Is there any other jazz combo in town that can include real Italian musicians, just very recently relocated to Australia? Can you quote another jazz band in town who can claim to have as its leader a DTV-saxophonist who has played for years with Giorgio Gaber, Ivano Fossati, Fiorella Mannoia, and Stefano Bollani (just to mention a few…!)? But most of all: which is the other band around, that, leaving behind the cheesy copies of Italian songs made famous by American singers like Louis Prima and Dean Martin, is really able to showcase intriguing tunes from the classy, sophisticated and intense Italian repertoire of the 50s and 60s, or introduce you to the fa- mous Italian “Musica d’Autore” or even surprise you with unexpected gems made famous by god- desses of Italian cinema the likes of Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida?
Lending a distinctly modern jazz sensibility to the combo, Mirko Guerrini has created a unique and world class ensemble, that can combine traditional jazz standards, modern groove with the Italian numbers.
Radiosuccessi, featuring the Florentine singer Ilaria Crociani and Melbournian jazz heavyweights Ryan Griffith on guitar, Jono Brown on double bass and Niko Schäuble on drums will showcase a sparkling repertoire someItalian up-tempo songs, written by the most famous songwriters, like Bruno Martino (Estate, Fai Male, Forse) and Lelio Luttazzi (Mi piace, Bum Ahi, Che colpo di luna, Senza cerini), or sung by Italian chanteuses like Mina, Jula de Palma and Milva. Plus some Ameri- can successes that became popular in Italy in the Fifties thanks to their translation into Italian.
Come and join us for a space-time travel to Italy!

Tamara Murphy: double bass
Niko Schauble: drums
Since Mirko Guerrini arrived in Melbourne from Italy in 2013, he has had the chance to meet and play with some of the most outstanding Australian musicians. Bassist, Tamara Murphy is one of the first bass players Guerrini played with, and he was immediately taken her “approach and heavy groove without any compromise with the melodic content since the first note”. Niko Schauble is Guerrini’s most solid musical relationship in Australia. His incredible flexibility and knowledge of the drums, makes interplay easy and rewarding. Andrea Keller is one of Australia’s most regarded pianists, renowned for intelligent melodic development and purity of sound.
In Mirko’s words, “this band is everything about melody. Horizontality as the main musical approach. You will hear all original music, mostly written exclusively for this band, where the four players are treated like single voices, part of a polyphonic ensemble. Harmonic content is created by the horizontal movement of the voices, and the high degree of interaction between the four musicians will blend everything together”.

Extasy Morricone is a trip.
A journey around modernity through rediscovery of true gems produced by the pen of remarkable Italian film composer Ennio Morricone.
Ennio Morricone created music for over 500 films, but as he says ‘only 30 of them were Westerns’. With Extasy Morricone we want to celebrate the more psychedelic, progressive, adventurous side of this Italian composer. Over the years he wrote a number of songs that bring attention to one of his greatest signatures: the wordless vocals, anchoring his subtle, rich arrangements.
The great talent of the Italian singer Ilaria Crociani and a fistful of incredibly multifaceted musicians will take you by the hand into the mesmerising sonic world of one of the geniuses of our times.
The show provides full testimony to Morricone’s eclecticism, in which we find sounds that were so diverse and so advanced that make him one of the greatest music innovators of the twentieth century.
Morricone, turning 90 this year, was able to conceive commercial music without renouncing to experimentalism and contemporary composition techniques. His use of unconventional instrumentation (harpsichord, percussions, bells, metallophones) alongside an unrelenting determination in chasing a unique sound for each one of his composition, is what we would like to showcase with this brand new project.
